iOS 5 Beta 7 For iPhone, iPad And iPod Touch

Apple has just released the seventh version of iOS 5 (build 9a5313e) to developers of iOS Developer program.iOS 5 beta 7 is available for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4th generation, iPod Touch 3rd generation, iPad and iPad 2.
Apple unveiled iOS 5 at WWDC 2011 Keynote, which includes more than 200 features for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users such as revamped Notification system with Notification Center, iMessage, PC Free, Wi-Fi Sync Newsstand, Reminders, deep Twitter integration and lots more. Apple has also improved the Camera app, Photo app, mobile Safari browser, Mail and Calendar app in iOS 5.
iOS 5 Beta 6 is also being offered over-the-air (OTA) and the delta is 70 MB in size for the iPhone.
Apple has also released Apple TV Software beta 6 for second generation Apple TV, iTunes 10.5 beta 7 and Xcode 4.2 Developer Preview 7 to developers.

Apple’s Photo Stream Feature Confirms Redesigned iPhone 5

9 to 5 Mac has discovered an icon in the new PhotoStream feature in iPhoto 9.2 beta, which appears to be an iPhone icon, but it doesn't look like iPhone 4. Interestingly, it looks more like the rumored redesigned iPhone 5 with a larger screen and rectangular home button.
We’ve heard conflicting reports about next generation iPhone’s form factor. According to some reports, next generation iPhone will be completely redesigned, will sport a larger screen and will look more like iPod Touch 4G rather than iPhone 4.
While, some reports claim that fifth generation iPhone will come with improved specifications such as faster processor, 8-megapixel camera etc. just like iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, but won’t feature an all-new design and will look like iPhone 4.
As you can see below, the icon in the new PhotoStream app seems to suggest that it will be the former - a completely redesigned iPhone.
Joshua Topolsky, former Engadget Editor who now writes at This is my next was the first to report that iPhone 5 will be completely redesigned back in April. According to their source, iPhone 5 will be thinner than the iPhone 4, and have a "teardrop" shape, which goes from thick to thin like MacBook Air. He had also claimed that the home button will be enlarged and will double up as the home button and also a gesture area.
You can also checkout the mockup of what the next generation iPhone will look like based on the information Topolsky received and as you can see it looks very similar to iPhone design seen in the icon.
Update:
It looks like these images originated from iPhoto 9.2 beta. Mac Rumors reports that the iPhone icon is possibility an artists representation rather than the iPhone 5 icon as it seems unlikely that the iPhoto team would have early access to the next generation iPhone.
What do you think about the possibility of a redesigned iPhone 5 with larger screen and rectangular home button? We're really excited, we can't wait to get our hands on the new iPhone.

U.S. Government Files Antitrust Complaint To Block AT&T From Acquiring T-Mobile USA

Bloomberg has just reported that U.S government has filed an antitrust complaint to block AT&T from acquiring T-Mobile USA.
AT&T - the largest carrier in the US had announced plans to acquire T-Mobile USA - fourth largest carrier for a whopping $39 billion in stock and cash.
Bloomberg reports:
“AT&T’s elimination of T-Mobile as an independent, low- priced rival would remove a significant competitive force from the market,” the U.S. said in its filing.
The acquisition was expected to help AT&T and T-Mobile to improve the voice quality thanks to the increased cell tower density and broader network infrastructure, especially AT&T whose customers have often complained about poor network coverage. But at that time Om Malik of GigaOM network had raised concerns about the acquisition as he believed that customers would be the biggest losers. He wrote:
The biggest losers of this deal are going to be the consumers. While AT&T and T-Mobile are going to try to spin it as a good deal to combine wireless spectrum assets, the fact is that T-Mobile USA is now out of the market.
T-Mobile USA has been fairly aggressive in offering cheaper voice and data plans as it has tried to compete with its larger brethren. The competition has kept the prices in the market low enough. This has worked well for U.S. consumers. With the merger of AT&T & T-Mobile, the market is now reduced to three national players – AT&T, Verizon and Sprint.  Net-net U.S. consumers are going to lose.
The U.S government seems to agree. It will be interesting to see if T-Mobile gets iPhone 5, as it was only last week that we heard rumors that the fourth largest carrier will finally be offering Apple's iPhone.
Are you glad that the AT&T - T-Mobile USA merger has been rejected? Please share your views in the comments below.

Purported iPhone 4S Casing Compared With GSM And CDMA iPhone 4

Last week, photos of the purported iPhone 4S casing suggested that the rumored iPhone 4S will come with some minor changes to the antenna system, but it was only partially visible.
MacRumors reports that they've received photos from some of their readers (via Ideal-Case.com), which appears to be the casing of rumored iPhone 4S, which give a better view of iPhone 4S antenna band. iPhone 4S is widely speculated to be a cheaper version of iPhone 4 that Apple will launch alongside iPhone 5.
Please note that in the photos below, the GSM iPhone 4 antenna band is at the top that is labeled "4G", the iPhone 4S antenna band is in the middle, which is labeled "5G or 4GS", and the CDMA iPhone 4 is at the bottom, which is labeled "CDMA".
Here are some observations from the photos:
  • The purported iPhone 4S casing has a micro-SIM slot, so if it is legitimate, it is more likely to be the GSM iPhone 4S rather than a CDMA iPhone 4S or it could support both GSM and CDMA.
  • It has a similar stainless steel band as iPhone 4, which serves as the antenna system, which had resulted in the Antennagate controversy after iPhone 4 was launched due to complaints of reception issues.
  • The breakpoints in the frame are same as the CDMA iPhone 4.
  • The change in position of the break point has also resulted in the slight adjustment in the position of the mute switch just like CDMA iPhone 4.
As Slivka points out this is not the first time we've seen this casing. We had seen a similar iPhone casing back in January. At that time, we were not sure if it was for the CDMA iPhone 4 or the next generation iPhone.
All of this is still speculative, it still remains to be seen if this iPhone casing is for iPhone 4S or its for iPhone 5, which would mean that the next iPhone will only be a minor upgrade and it can also be fake.

Updated Redsn0w For iOS 4.3.3 May Fix Battery Drain Issue

Earlier today, iPhone Dev team released updated versions of Redsn0w andPwnageTool, while iH8sn0w released an updated version of Sn0wbreeze that includes a fix for the side switch vibration issue.
Dev team and iH8sn0w acknowledged that iPhone hacking expert Stefan Essar (Twitter handle - i0n1c) had figured out a way to fix the issue.Stefan Essar has also revealed that the fix may also decrease the battery drain that you may have observed afterjailbreaking your iOS device with Redsn0w 0.9.6rc15, PwnageTool 4.3.3 or Sn0wbreeze 2.7.
He has provided the following information about the fix on Twitter:
BTW: by using the latest RedSw0w you also might decrease the battery drain.
Process Priority was not restored after the kernel exploit. That might have caused some battery drain.
So if you have jailbroken your iOS device using Redsn0w 0.9.6rc15, PwnageTool 4.3.3 or Sn0wbreeze 2.7 then you can install the fix simply by running Redsn0w 0.9.6rc16 (download links available in this post) over the iOS 4.3.3 jailbreak but remember to uncheck the “Install Cydia” option.
If you’ve used the latest version of the jailbreak tools such asRedsn0w 0.9.6rc16, PwnageTool 4.3.3.1 or Sn0wbreeze 2.7.1 then you don’t need to worry as the issue is already fixed.
As always, let us know if the battery drain is reduced after installing the fix using the latest version of Redsn0w.

Apple Proposes Smaller SIM Card Standard To Make Thinner iPhones And iPads

Reuters reports that Apple has proposed a smaller SIM card standard to (European telecoms standards body) ETSI. The proposed SIM card is smaller than the micro-SIM card used in iPhone 4 and iPad.
The smaller SIM form factor will help Apple make thinner iPhones and iPads 3G. Some major mobile operators like Orange are also backing Apple’s new SIM card design.
Reuters reports:
"We were quite happy to see last week that Apple has submitted a new requirement to (European telecoms standards body) ETSI for a smaller SIM form factor -- smaller than the one that goes in iPhone 4 and iPad," said Anne Bouverot, Orange's head of mobile services.
"They have done that through the standardization route, through ETSI, with the sponsorship of some major mobile operators, Orange being one of them," she told the Paris leg of the Reuters Global Technology Summit.
It will still take some time for Apple’s proposal to be accepted, so don’t expect it to be adopted in iPhone 5. You can checkout the dimensions of the different SIM cards below:
The dimensions of Apple’s proposed new SIM card standard is not yet known.
Let us know what you think about the possibilities of future iPhones coming with a smaller SIM card slot.
